The writer undertaking historical fiction faces a problem peculiar to this genre, which is to make the narrative and dialogue seem authentic while at the same time keeping the characters accessible to the modern reader’s sensibility. People in ancient Judea can’t fist-bump each other or say “OK”; on the other hand, if they speak in King James Biblese, the reader might have trouble seeing them as flesh and blood, living characters. Boorstin solves this problem with such facility that, unless you know it can be a problem, you don’t even notice that he has accomplished it. As a result, he is able to render an epic, pivotal career in understandable, human terms. David and the Philistine Woman is a remarkable literary achievement and, by the way, a great read. Lots of action, insight and intriguing propositions about how circumstances, inherent character and inspiration came together to transform a shepherd boy into a king.

David and the Philistine Woman Paul Boorstin 9781785355370 Books Reviews

The book follows David from when he finds out that he is to be anointed King to killing Goliath. It's good, but the.most interesting character is Nara.
What a delight! "David and the Philistine Woman" is written with wit, compassion, and a joyous sense of history, Boorstin vividly brings the biblical story of David and Goliath to life. These are characters that were names frozen in time, trapped in long-revered texts. Now they are real, living and breathing personalities, that the reader can follow, step-by-step, through dangerous times. Take a magic carpet ride, guided by a master.
A thrilling saga exquisitely told in an elegant lyrical narrative voice that seems almost as if it were being read aloud. Boorstin is a gifted storyteller, pacing events with an unerring sense of plot and movement that creates suspense and holds belief. Not an easy thing to achieve. Overall it is Boorstin's wonderful imagination that triumphs here. The people come vibrantly alive, the scenery is textured and mysterious, all through the author's superb sense of descriptive language. A book not only of great character and language, but also of faith.
We all know the story of David and Goliath. In David and the Philistine Woman, Paul Boorstin tells the story behind the story. It's fictionalized, but at least to this reader it seems genuine and authentic. This is how I imagined people lived in those times. Boorstin renders this classic tale in a vivid way, like someone adding more color and character. We meet the characters who could have played significant parts in the drama, including the "Philistine woman" whose fate and David's became inextricably linked. This is a very worthwhile read.

Weaving together archetypal Biblical tales and new archeological findings, Paul Boorstin has created a world that is both intimate and exotic. Reading this book is like standing before an ancient monument and asking who were these people, what dreams motivated them, who were their friends and their enemies? Boorstin persuades us to enter their lives now. I found myself deeply moved by the story of Nara, the Philistine woman who stands to lose everything precious to her when she is drawn into an alliance with David, the shepherd destined to become king of the Israelites. Even cruel Goliath is accorded a flash of sympathy as he recognizes that one day he will be too old to prevail in battle. Surprising, powerful, and touching.
The Biblical story of David and Goliath has been brilliantly expanded into a novel with twists from the imagination of author Paul Boorstin, principally the invention of the wife of Goliath, Nara, who raises his wrath by her inability to bear him sons. The intertwining of Nara's fate with the fate of David, the poet / musician destined to become King of Israel, shows the author's deft literary skill. Boorstin's recreation of Biblical times, realistically placing us in an era when you might say a wheelbarrow would be considered advanced technology, shows massive research and meticulous attention to detaIl. It has a lyric simplicity of style that makes for easy reading.
DAVID AND THE PHILISTINE is a fascinating, creative depiction of the events leading up to the familiar ‘David & Goliath’ story, one of my favorites since childhood Bible classes. Paul Boorstin’s elaboration on well-known Biblical figures, addition of fascinating new characters, and detailed descriptions of the varied cultures bring the shepherd David and his world to life. This well-researched book allows the reader to become immersed in the cultures of the Israelites and Philistines and begin to understand the motivations behind familiar Biblical events. I enjoyed seeing the world not only from David’s perspective, but also from the women’s point of view. Nara, Goliath’s wife (the Philistine Woman from the book’s title), and Michal, Saul’s daughter, have significant roles in David’s story. The interactions of these women from different cultures and beliefs with David’s path make for an exciting, page-turning narrative. I highly recommend this beautiful story.
