Wrongfully convicted of a crime he did not commit, Mike Ward’s only escape from prison life is through his dreams. His night visions of a garden paradise were so vivid they felt real – but he could not imagine they would enable him to step into a reality far beyond his imaginings and on a quest to save Ganae-Den, a realm of eternal peace and beauty.
Mike discovers he is a Dreamshifter, a being who can travel to other dimensions via his dreams. As he learns to shift to other realms, he determines to never return to his earthly prison. But the Shield Tree that protects Ganae-Den is dying; LifeStealer, a Dreamshifter hungry for conquest, has stolen the magical stones from the Shield Tree. For this, the Way to other realms is closing, and the garden paradise is now open to attack.
Debut novelist D. L. Silverman draws the reader into a world where dreams become reality, and the nightmare of reality invades your dreams. Broken Dreams is the first book of The Dreamshift Chronicles Trilogy.
The Dreamshift Chronicles Book 1 Broken Dreams eBook D L Silverman
I have a confession to make; my favorite fantasy/sci-fi books involve traveling to other worlds. Whether it be stepping through a wardrobe, or staring at a red light in the night sky, only to find yourself transported to the red planet, Mars. I love stories of people discovering new and exciting worlds, and The Dreamshift Chronicles, Book 1 - Broken Dreams is just such a book.Mr. Silverman has written a book with likeable characters, and is not guilty of the quantity over quality crime, inundating us with hundreds of characters to remember. The characters he has created are realistic, and seem like someone you could know in real life. I came to care about these characters and their plight, and wanted to see this story through to the end.
All said and done, it is Mr's Silverman's first novel, it probably won't go down in history as one of the great American novels, but it kept me engaged, and made me look forward to future tales from this new author. That's all I ask for in a book.
I look forward to the next volume in this series!

I actually pre-ordered this book in paperback, and then bought a copy from for my .
I never knew what the next chapter was going to say. This book kept me on my toes hard to put down.
The Dreamshift Chronicles was a fun and exciting read! I enjoyed the well developed characters. The concept of being able to "shift" your body to another planet while dreaming was neat as were the mysteries of dreamshifting itself. I like the main characters and want to see what happens to them, so I'm looking forward to reading the second book in this series!!
Silverman takes you on a very unique ride with this story that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read. I'm not an avid reader and I generally lack the interest to commit to a book with very few exceptions. This is one of them. I felt the whole take on reality and religion to be a geniunely fascinating and very entertaining. I"m looking forward to Volume 2.
General Overview
I'm not generally a fantasy reader, but I thought the plot of The Dream-shift Chronicles - Broken Dreams sounded like an interesting one and so I decided to pick it up. I'm quite pleased at my decision!
Though it took some time before I could find myself fully invested in the book (which is generally the case for me), once I found myself enthralled with Mike Ward's plight I simply couldn't put it down.
I feel like the characters and scenes were well developed and allowed for the reader to fill in the gaps as he or she liked - I always find myself frustrated when authors (especially in the Fantasy genre) find it necessary to provide every minutiae, Silverman seems to strike the perfect balance of detail and brevity so as to move the story forward and entrust the reader with the right to dream up the rest. I was truly able to create Ganae-den and the other worlds from the book in my mind quite vividly and follow a fast paced and intriguing story.

a few things
The first few chapters seemed a bit slow for me, I always struggle to get into the Fantasy genre - but I believe Silverman may have been doing this on purpose to try to create the atmosphere of prison life. The more I read into the book the more I recognized how intentional that initial slowness was, and believe me when I say that it was made up for - especially during the final scenes at the Battle of Ganae-den's Meadow...which was, for lack of better words - page turning at it's best.
I also couldn't help but find myself invested in the Hetchets, losing them at the beginning broke my heart and I wasn't sure how the book was going to move forward without them - Silverman did so well while keeping their memory alive, but as someone who finds themselves often highly invested in characters I found it very difficult to deal with at first.
One thing I'd like to know is whether or not the man in the suit from the prison whom was questioning Mike is still waiting for him to come back, I would have loved to have seen some sort of closure to this - perhaps in the next book? This is actually the scene that got me hooked and rooting for Mike so I hated to not know if more came from it back on planet Earth. I'm picturing an entire prison being demolished in search of Keith and Mike....hah

I enjoyed the book a lot, I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy to come out and maybe even some sort of adaptation into another sort of media. It was exciting, asked difficult moral questions, and embodied both the ups and downs of real life in a unique story that I hope ends up on many more bookshelves.
