Samuel Smiles (23 December 1812 – 16 April 1904), was a Scottish author and government reformer who campaigned on a Chartist platform. His masterpiece, Self-Help (1859), has been called "the bible of mid-Victorian liberalism", and it raised Smiles to celebrity status almost overnight.

"The Huguenots in France," written in the 1870s by Samuel Smiles, begins with the revocation of the Edict of Nantes and continues until the time of the French Revolution. While many of the Huguenots fled the country, others suffered incredible persecution at the hands of the crown, the French soldiers, and the church leaders. In spite of this, French Protestantism refused to die. Smiles' book describes in great detail this tragic period in the history of France. Written in a lively and engaging style, Smiles' book is hard to put down once one has started it.In addition to a lengthy overview of the period, which comprises the first half of the book, Smiles gives detailed accounts of the lives of several of those who escaped France and settled in England. In addition, the last part of the book talks about the Vaudois, who were the French Waldensians, and who lived in the rugged Alps of southeastern France. While dating from far before the Reformation and technically not Huguenots, they too were an often persecuted people who nevertheless survived with their identity intact.
All in all, this is a most informative book and a great read for anyone with an interest in the history of the Huguenots.

One of many books I use for genealogy documentation.
Interesting history in detail I did not expect. I have read several books on the Cathars. This was a continuation of the religious persecution by the Roman Church. Although not presented here, it helps the historian understand the extensive and brutal pograms by the church.
It started well, then two thirds Into the narrative, the author goes back in time as if he had forgotten to address some points the first time. And more details are given, too many really, that serve no purpose to learning about the plight of the Huguenots. It's like sitting through a family gathering and having to listen to Uncle Fred's seemingly never ending ramblings.
This late-19th century historical review of France's 16th-17th persecution of its Protestant (Huguenot) population reveals in exacting details just how far the country went under Louis 14th and successors to eliminate the "heretics" from France's territory, while refusing to let them immigrate to escape the horrific methods of persecution (though many of them did, anyway). The loss of so many of the country's professionals and skilled artisans set back France's economy for 200 years, enabling France and Holland's entrepreneurial energies to surpass it. Worth a read.
Although written in 1870, this is a very readable,well-written history of the Inquisition-like persecution of the Huguenots after the religious protection of the Edict of Nantes was withdrawn. Many specific incidents are documented and explained.
It would have been even better if there had been maps to trace the location of the incidents, and pictures to show the countryside where these events occurred.
All in all, very engaging and informative.
This book deals with the persecution of the Huguenots in France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in October 18, 1685. Therefore, it cuts into Huguenot history midstream. This is a very good account of the history following the Revocation. It is a startling description of what the French government unleashed on its own Protestant citizens. The author sheds light on that dark page in the history of France and gives a number of the dire consequences that nation suffered because of the loss of thousands of productive tradesmen. The final 100-pages of the text is devoted to the history of the Vaudois (Waldenses) in the mountains between France and Italy. He recounts the brutal persecutions leveled against them and traces their life style until the mid-nineteenth century. A few places it sounds more like a hiker's tour guide.
This book is well worth reading.
Samuel Smiles is of Scottish Presbyterian descent, so his account has an inevitable strong bias. Yet his reputation for good judgement is excellent with well balanced commentary. Difficult, however, to check on the book's factual details, since information on the reference points - there are 108 of them in the text, marked eg [108] - have been completely omitted by this publisher! This is inexcusable for a serious factual history.
