Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I loved Stevie’s journey to self acceptance, and ‘seeing’ her slowly become more comfortable and assertive. The writing style and pace were wonderful, and the book held my interest well. I had two issues with the story, though. 1) as a mental health worker, it bothered me that despite THIS schizophrenic character being violent, the vast majority of people with mental illness (including schizophrenia) are NOT violent. Of those who’d are violent, the large majority are violent only towards themselves. I would have been much more comfortable with the storyline if the author had included this. 2) I appreciated the author’s exploration of obesity, weight loss, and society’s response to obese people. BUT. Eileen’s character was the only overweight character and she was awful. It all felt very stereotypical: one character suffered something so traumatic she turned to food as a coping mechanism. The other just defiantly decided to be obese and interacted with the world through a cloud of bitterness. Obesity is a complex issue that includes aspects of medical, genetic, psychological, and behavioral components. I applaud the author for tackling such a complex and challenging topic. But I couldn’t help feeling it wasn’t explored accurately or completely. On the positive side - the story of Stevie’s childhood was heartbreaking. I loved the grandparents, and felt their characters were very well developed. I loathed the uncle, and commiserated with the family members in having grown up with such a critical force. This was my first book I’ve read by Cathy Lamb, but am sure I’ll be reading more in the future.Tags : Such A Pretty Face [Cathy Lamb] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have read this book 3 times now and I love it! It's a story that makes you look deep inside yourself and consider why you are the way you are.
Couldn't put it down, from the first page to the last. Tragedy of mental illness, and power of love of family.
Sometimes, as I read this book, I had to stop, crying and feeling so sad about the family tragedies endured in this book>. But then, ultimately, joy and goodness overcame through acts of love and kindness. I reflected upon my own family problems, which paled in significance. This book reminded me of all that I am thankful for.
Cathy Lamb is a phenomenon. Somehow she invent characters that take over our hearts, souls, and, lives. I highly recommend this book to all and especially to those who struggle with mental illness in their family. You will fall in love with Stevie and she’ll stay inside your head for a long long time.
I'm a BIG Cathy Lamb fan. She is a bit on the Quirky side, but that's okay. she makes me laugh and she makes me cry. I've read every one of her books and this one is one of my favorites!!! I highly recommend this or any other by this author. Love Her!!!
I am pretty sure this is the best book i have read this year. And I read a LOT. The character development is superb. I experienced every possible emotion while reading this book. I laughed aloud at the situations and descriptions and I wept at the poignancy of them. I feel like I know Stevie Rockwell and if she walked into this room I would recognize her without introduction. My only question is "Why have I never heard of Cathy Lamb before??"
I almost didn't buy this because of the comments in the reviews. I'm so glad I chose to give it a try. Though unsure for the first chapter or two (which gave some graphic background), when the characters started developing i stayed intrigued. A number of reviewers said they found all of the characters unlikeable. I felt just the opposite - i loved each one of them, especially understanding and appreciating the reasons behind their flaws. Even the least likable was understandably self-centered and struck out as a result of her own insecurities and experiences. I love reading stories where the characters experience positive growth despite their history.
