Literally the worst book I have ever read. The main character Tabitha was such a disgusting selfish person it was impossible to care about what happened to her or be invested in the forced love story. Why would anyone want to date her? The way she treated her children was neglect at best but was more abuse then anything else. Plus, the story was implausible.**SPOILERS**
So we're supposed to believe this woman was unable to even food shop, and had to go around stealing from hotel laundry carts and people's gardens? She had a best friend who worked in some kind of food store, you'd rather let your kids starve then ask for some help? And her credit card was for 'emergencies only'. When the plot needed her to she was able to use the credit card, but not to feed her kids. Feeding your two children wasn't an emergency, but going to lunch with a fried was? So instead of getting a job she sits around on her computer doing nothing. Then she goes on a job interview, is supposedly hired and handed medical records for an elderly dementia patient-on the spot with no background check. LIke seriously?
She goes on to treat the woman with dementia horribly. She is rude and uncaring towards her, eats her food, and won't even play a game with the poor woman. She notices the woman has large sums of money lying around and starts returning to the apartment to steal. She didn't even have the decency to treat the woman kindly while stealing the cash. What a deplorable human being. But SURPRISE!! Tabitha was taking the money...but the old lady is not only her new boyfriends mother-but she's leaving that cash laying around on purpose! I rolled my eyes so hard they almost fell out of my head.
The best is Tabitha's 9 year old having severe pain in her knee, that goes on and only gets worse, but she won't take her to the doctor because she doesn't want to pay the copay. She has no problem meeting her new boyfriend to watch ball games, and lunching with friends, but won't take the child to the doctor. She also brushes her daughter off in the emergency room (where her son is) because the new boyfriend is calling. I almost gave up on the book at this point, but it was free and I hate not finishing things.
The last piece of ridiculousness is the husband who abandoned Tabitha and the two kids. He is holed away in a cabin mourning the ex he should have married, and no one can get ahold of him. Then he suddenly reappears and we are supposed to believe he remotely cares about his children? Not that I blame him for leaving-we witness a scene where Tabitha treats him horribly. I don't blame him for leaving but doubt he would have abandoned his children like that.
We also learn Tabitha sold food to someone with food allergies that may have caused them to possibly die. But surprise!! He's alive after all! So she's really a great person after all....NOT.
The main character was so disgusting and there wasn't any likeable characters in the book, except maybe the 9 year old. The only thing that woiuld have redeemed this book is if CPS took the ids away from the horrible parents.

Not Perfect A Novel edition by Elizabeth LaBan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Once I start a book I kind of HAVE to finish it. Unless the book is so bad that I can't. Not Perfect by Elizabeth LaBan was not the best.
We open the book to find out that the husband Stuart is gone. He disappeared from his life as a loving father to two kids and a role as a perfect husband to Tabitha. Tabitha completely falls apart and abandons the needs of her kids and is consumed with where her husband is, who'll she'll steal from next to make ends meet and the cute new guy she met. Meanwhile the kids seem completely fine with eating toast for breakfast and crackers for dinner.
In the end the husband reappears in time for his son's bar mitzvah, and Tabitha seems to land a job after months of stealing from an old lady with dementia.
I don't get this book at all. Who in their right mind would sympathize with any of these characters?? Kids notwithstanding. I just felt so very bad for them.
While portions of the book were fine, overall this was not the book for me. The protagonist is highly unlikeable, making one bad decision after another. At times I wanted to reach into the book and shake her. Her husband has been gone for months, she is stealing food from restaurant buffets, but still she spends very little time trying to find a job (she doesn’t even have money to pay for lightbulbs so they are almost in the dark in their apartment). Then her daughter is at the hospital for a leg injury, and Tabitha is more worried about taking a phone call from a new guy she is interested in than she is about what is wrong with her daughter (?!?!). Her mother suffered from dementia before she died and whenever Tabitha reflects on their relationship she grumbles about how frustrating and annoying it had been to care for her. As someone personally dealing with that situation myself, I found that galling and beyond unkind and selfish. There was only so much of that I could take after a while. I did finish it because I was so curious where the husband had gone and what his threatening note meant. I don't want to include any spoilers so all I will say is that the ending was a letdown. I realize that not every book appeals to everyone, but this certainly was not the book for me. I would look long and hard at the other First choices before I picked this one.
